Lanistably was not designed as gym management software. It started as an answer to one question a coach could not answer quickly enough.
A coach who runs CrossFit classes got in touch. They were not shopping for a platform. They were tired of scrolling back through messages to work out who was in tonight's session, and tired of turning somebody away from a class that turned out to be half empty.
What they asked for was small. A list of the classes they were running, and a list of who had signed up for each one. It had to be quick enough to use between sets, and plain enough that their members would never need to be shown how.
So that is what got built. One screen with the week on it, and a name under every session.
Then the next question arrived, and the one after that. None of them were feature ideas. Each was something that had already gone wrong on a Tuesday evening.
- What happens when the class is full?
- Sessions got a capacity, and anyone booking past it joins a waitlist. When somebody drops out, the next person is booked automatically and told by email — because a spot that goes unnoticed is a spot that goes empty.
- Can they just book themselves in?
- A shareable link shows what is on and how much room is left. Clients confirm the email address already on their coach's roster, so there is no account to create and no password to forget.
- Who actually turned up?
- Check in, no-show and cancel, each of them reversible, and nothing ever deleted. The register has to be honest if it is what you bill and plan from.
- Has this one paid?
- Payments are recorded against the person rather than kept in a separate spreadsheet, so the answer is on the same screen as everything else about them.
- Are they actually getting stronger?
- Measurements and coaching notes live on a client's profile, so the encouragement a coach gives is backed by a record they can both see.
The rule has not changed since that first screen. A coach should be able to run their week from a phone on the gym floor, without a manual and without a training session on how to use it.
